Why the safe-to-use figure is lower than my balance

Your balance is what you hold. Safe-to-use is what is left once everything already committed to this pay period comes out of it. The gap between them is the whole point of the app.

Before you start

If the figure looks wrong rather than merely low, the cause is nearly always a bill sitting in the wrong pay period. There is a check for that below.

Steps

1

Start from the balance

Cashrou adds up what your payment accounts actually hold today, counting only your share of anything shared.

2

Take out the buffer

The floor you said you never want to go below. It is subtracted before anything else, so the app never plans with money you have already decided is untouchable.

Buffers are set per account, in Accounts. Setting one to zero is allowed and makes the figure larger and less forgiving.
3

Take out the bills still to come

Every unpaid bill dated before your next payday. Rent that leaves on the 1st is gone whether or not it has left yet, so counting it as spendable would be a lie with a date on it.

4

Add income still to land

Money you have told Cashrou is coming in this period but has not arrived. It counts, because it will be there before the bills are.

Ticking a bill off does not change it

This surprises people. Paying a bill moves money out of the account, and the account balance falls by the same amount the bill was holding back. The two cancel out, and safe-to-use stays where it was.

That is deliberate. A figure that jumped every time you ticked something would be counting the same money twice, which is the bug this calculation exists to prevent.

If the figure still looks wrong

Check the pay period the bills landed in. A bill due on the 2nd belongs to the paycheck before it, not the one after, and a bill assigned to the wrong side makes one period look poor and the next look rich.

Check your buffers. Two accounts each holding back $500 is $1,000 out of the figure, which is right but easy to forget.

Check for a large annual bill that has just come into range. Cashrou shows it in the period it is actually due, which is the point, but it does arrive as a shock the first time.
