Confirming account balances each cycle

There is no bank connection, so this is the moment the plan and reality are brought back together. It is step one of every payday routine, and it takes about thirty seconds.

Before you start

Have your banking app open, or the balances written down. You are only confirming the accounts that actually pay bills and receive income. A joint account counts at your share of it, and sharing a plan with a partner says where that is set.

Steps

1

Open Payday and start the routine

Confirm balances is the first card. Cashrou lists your payment accounts and prefills each one with the balance it expected.

Only payment accounts appear here. The brokerage account is not paying the electricity bill, so it is not asked about every cycle.
2

Type what each account really holds

The figure labelled Balance today is what is in the account this morning, before this payday's income and bills. Overwrite the prefilled number wherever it is wrong.

3

Read the difference

Where your figure and the expected one disagree, Cashrou shows the gap. That gap is the useful part: it is a bill that came out larger than planned, a charge nobody logged, or money that arrived and was not recorded.

4

Confirm, and the rest of the routine goes live

Everything downstream, safe-to-use included, is now built on today rather than on a guess from a fortnight ago.

Why there is no bank connection

A bank connection would report what already went out. Cashrou is trying to plan what is still to come, which is a different job and does not need a transaction feed to do it.

It also means there is no bank password for Cashrou to hold, and nothing to leak if it ever were breached. Typing four balances once a fortnight is the price of that, and most people find it takes less time than fixing a broken bank connection does.

When the gap is large

A gap of a few dollars is rounding and interest. A gap of a few hundred is usually a bill that is not in Cashrou yet, or one whose amount has changed. Add it or edit it while you are looking at it, and the next cycle reconciles cleanly.

Confirming does not rewrite history. Past paydays keep the figures they were closed with.
